A knocked-out tooth is an unfortunate incident. However, there's still hope that you can save the tooth. It all depends on the tooth's condition and the actions that you take after it's been knocked out.
What You Need to Do After a Tooth Is Knocked Out
If you knock out a tooth, there's a chance that a dentist can save it. Go to your dentist immediately to receive emergency dentistry. In the meantime, here is what you should do to preserve your tooth:
Don't touch the tooth at the root. You should only handle the tooth by the crown or the part that usually shows above the gumline. If it's dirty, rinse with cold water to remove the particles.
If you can, try to put the tooth back into the socket and gently use a clean cloth to hold the tooth in place. This is the best option for preserving the tooth.
If the tooth doesn't easily go back in, you can put the tooth in a glass filled with milk or saliva. You can also hold the tooth in your cheek.
What the Dentist Will Do
Once you're at the dentist, they can evaluate your situation. They will try to insert the tooth back into the socket and use splints to keep it in place. You might have to revisit the dentist in a couple of weeks to remove the splints.
If a dentist determines that they can't save your tooth, you will need to look into dental replacements like crowns or implants.
