Clear aligner therapy has revolutionized the orthodontic field. Aligners can gently and effectively move teeth into their desired positions without anyone noticing you’re wearing them! After you complete any orthodontic treatment, you will also receive retainers to keep your teeth in place. When wearing retainers or aligners, keeping them clean is important! Aligners and retainers can harbor bacteria if they aren’t cleaned regularly. Here’s what you need to know about keeping your aligners or retainers in great shape!
1. Use a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush & Mild Dish Soap
One of the best daily routines for cleaning your retainers or aligners is to brush them. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush, gently brush your aligners or retainers with mild dish soap. Repeat this process in the morning and at night to keep bacteria from collecting on them.
2. Purchase a Specialty Retainer Cleaning Solutions
Many brands, like Invisalign®, offer specialty cleaning solutions for patients to use. You can soak your retainers or aligners for 10 to 15 minutes in the solution. The solutions are specifically designed to disinfect the oral appliance and dissolve any plaque buildup.
3. Create a Baking Soda Mixture
If your aligners or retainers start to smell, it can be difficult to get rid of the stench. Add a tablespoon of baking powder to half a cup of water and mix it together. Then, soak your aligners in the baking soda mixture for 15 to 30 minutes. After they finish soaking, rinse with warm water.
4. Soak in Alcohol-Free Mouthwash
Need to clean your aligners or retainers quickly? Most people have mouthwash laying around! You can soak them in alcohol-free mouthwash for three minutes and then rinse them with cold water after.
