There are two types of braces: traditional and ceramic. With traditional braces, the brackets are metal, while ceramic braces are made from a clear material. Both types often use elastics, which are small rubber bands attached by hooks. Why are they important?
The Purpose of Elastics
Elastics are most often used to fix issues like overbites, underbites, crossbites, and open bites. We also use elastics to adjust the spacing between teeth. The elastics increase the force of the braces, moving your teeth and aligning your bite. Without these rubber bands, treatment time would take much longer.
When Should You Wear Elastics?
You need to wear the elastics 20-22 hours a day, but there are certain times when you can take them out. Before brushing your teeth is a great time as long as you remember to replace the bands before bed. Some people also take out their elastics when they’re eating. You should put clean ones in right after, especially if you choose to eat with the rubber bands. It’s a good idea to carry elastics with you so you can replace them after eating or if they snap.
Do Elastics Hurt?
Elastics can be uncomfortable for a little while. You might feel teeth and jaw soreness until your mouth adjusts. Don’t remove the bands to improve the discomfort. If you’re not wearing them for the recommended length of time each day, your treatment will take longer than it should.
