Braces are seen as almost a rite of passage for pre-teens and teens everywhere. But how can you tell when it’s time for your child to see an orthodontist for the first time? Let’s walk through the process below.
Knowing the Right Time
There’s no standard time to get braces, because every child and their oral health situation is completely different. However, there are a couple of things to look out for when thinking about taking your child to an orthodontist. First, note if your child has already lost most of their baby teeth, and how their adult teeth are growing in so far. Then, talk to your child’s dentist and see if they notice any potential misalignments, hints of overcrowding, or odd bite patterns.
Early Planning
Sometimes, your child may need an orthodontic consultation as early as between the ages of 6 and 10. From there, the orthodontist may decide that the best route to go is to remove the remaining baby teeth and use expanders to help the adult teeth grow in faster.
First Phase
Children often get their first set of full braces between the ages of 11 and 13, when most (if not all) of their adult teeth have grown in. During this time, your orthodontist will carefully keep track of the progress your child is making and be able to create a very clear game plan for your child’s orthodontic health.
